Planet Earth II becomes first natural history Blu-ray

The series will be available on 13 March

Planet Earth II is set to become the first ever natural history TV series to be released on 4K UHD Blu-ray.

The series, which will be released on 13 March, will showcase 4K resolution with High Dynamic Range (HDR) and a wider colour spectrum, as well as 5.1 DTS-HD master audio.

Lesley Johnson, operations director UK for BBC Worldwide said, “The picture quality is astonishing. For the first time, viewers can experience at home the picture quality viewed in the edit suite.

“The vastly improved compression of UHD Blu-ray with HDR means the experience is up to ten times better than any broadcast or streaming service can provide.”

Presented by Sir David Attenborough, Planet Earth II was filmed in 117 locations throughout 40 different countries.

Jonathan Cheesmur, director of European Creative Services, Sony, added, “The depth of field and pin-sharp resolution are stunning in UHD Blu-ray, and perfectly showcase the filming techniques used by the Planet Earth II production team.

“UHD Blu-ray delivers a high data rate, far exceeding that of streaming services. Viewers will be amazed by the truly immersive experience when watching this landmark series in the very best possible quality.”
