Meet the… head of business operations

Sofya Trethewey, MRMC's head of business operations, tells TVBEurope how building strong relationships and committing to continuous learning makes candidates stand out in the media and entertainment workplace

Talk us through an average day in your role.

As the head of business operations at Mark Roberts Motion Control (MRMC), my day involves overseeing various functions, including HR, IT, facilities, corporate social responsibility, and GDPR compliance. I focus on operational strategy and efficiency, ensuring that business operations run smoothly. A typical day includes meetings with department heads, reviewing policies, implementing sustainability initiatives, and fostering a positive work culture through employee engagement and social responsibility programmes.

How did you get started in the media industry?

My journey into the industry was not conventional. I initially worked in the education and construction sectors before joining MRMC in 2016 as a HR manager. Over the years, I took on additional responsibilities and expanded my role beyond HR, moving into business operations and strategic management within the company.

What training did you have before entering the industry?

My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in PR & English Language from Udmurt University, followed by a Master’s degree in HR from Kings College in the UK. This provided me with a strong foundation in communication and people management. Additionally, my experience across different sectors equipped me with the skills necessary to excel in business operations within the media technology industry.

Why do you enjoy working in the industry?

I enjoy working in the industry because it allows me to be part of the creative process that brings joy to millions. The equipment MRMC produces is a tangible result of our efforts—real, hands-on innovations that become essential tools for creators, directors, and artists to express themselves. Within the organisation, I appreciate being part of a relatively small team while also belonging to a global corporation. This unique balance of having access to international opportunities and policies while being responsible for on-the-ground implementation is rare and rewarding.

If you’re looking to pursue a career in business operations, my advice is to stay curious, be adaptable, and seize opportunities that help you grow your skill set. Success in this field requires strategic thinking, strong leadership, and the ability to navigate complex challenges. Be prepared to be the only female in the room and make yourself heard, so work on your voice and confidence to speak up and defend your point of view. Gaining diverse industry experience, building strong professional relationships, and committing to continuous learning will set you apart.
