Deutsche Welle (DW) has appointed Barbara Massing as director general.
Confirmed unanimously by the German PSB’s broadcasting council, Massing becomes the first woman to take on the role since DW was founded in 1953. She succeeds Peter Limbourg.
Previously a producer for German public broadcaster ARD and Franco-German company Arte, Massing joined DW in 2006, becoming part of its management team in 2014.
Qualified as a lawyer, she most recently served as MD for business administration and has been a key player in expanding programming at the organisation.
Massing has pledged to uphold the company’s role as a trusted, independent global broadcaster at a time of heightened concerns over AI-driven disinformation.
