Livewire Digital has been detailing its ongoing collaboration with Blackmagic Design to provide a simple, low cost, IP newsgathering workflow which means that journalists in the field can now use a broadcast camera and a laptop to deliver low latency, high quality, live HD video to the studio.

In 2012, Livewire Digital introduced live capture from Blackmagic’s new range of Thunderbolt and USB3 UltraStudio and Intensity products to enable connections from SDI and HDMI video and audio sources for both Windows and OSX users working with M-Link Live X live video over IP software.

As Blackmagic has added new products to the range, Livewire Digital has ensured that M-Link is compatible, offering customers maximum flexibility. The introduction of Blackmagic’s new pocket-sized UltraStudio Mini Recorder and Mini Monitor1, for instance, brings “a new level of affordability, convenience and compactness” to OSX users, adding less than 300 grams to a camera kit, powered over the Thunderbolt connection, whilst providing direct feeds from HD-SDI and HDMI sources.

Livewire Digital’s M-Link Live X software is simple and intuitive to use and automatically controls the BGAN satellite uplink and shuts it down at the end of a transmission. M-Link is in use around the globe for live links from the field using available IP networks such as 3G/4G, mobile satellite links including Inmarsat BGAN, Thuraya-IP, Iridium Pilot, VSAT, Ka-band, DSL and other broadband networks.

Livewire Digital enabled low cost delivery of broadcast video over very low bandwidth satellite links over 20 years ago, since then, the UK-based company has been leveraging emerging technologies to ensure M-Link stays at the forefront of broadcast newsgathering solutions.
