ITV ‘leads race’ to acquire BT Sport stake

Talks are said to be at an early stage

ITV is reportedly in talks to take a stake in BT Sport.

As TVBEurope reported yesterday, BT has confirmed it is in discussions over a potential sale or external investment into its sports broadcasting arm.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, ITV has emerged as a possible partner for BT Sport. The talks are said to be an early stage and may not lead to an eventual deal.

Any deal with ITV could bring UEFA Champions League matches back to terrestrial TV. ITV previously held the rights before being outbid for exclusive rights by BT Sport.

The report states talks are underway with no strict timetable on a potential deal.

Yesterday BT released a statement confirming it was “in early discussions with a number of select strategic partners to explore ways to generate investment, strengthen our sports business, and take it to the next stage of its growth.”
