Is the media industry about to see another mega-merger?

CBS and Viacom are reportedly "gearing up" to resume merger talks

Just as the media and entertainment industry has digested Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, rumours are again circulating that CBS and Viacom are looking to merge.

According to the New York Post, the two companies are “gearing up” to resume talks.

It says CBS’ independent directors are expected to approach the company’s board in the next few weeks. The board will then approach Viacom with an offer.

The paper suggests the deal is expected to be done by a share swap, as Viacom’s shares have fallen 15 per cent in the last 12 months, compared with an 11 per cent drop at CBS.

Rumours of a possible CBS-Viacom merger first began in January 2018, with one analyst suggesting it’s a “foregone conclusion” earlier this year.
