Is LaLiga next on Amazon’s shopping list?

LaLiga's current broadcast contract with Movistar Plus and Mediapro runs out at the end of the upcoming season

Reports in Spain suggest Amazon could be preparing to bid for broadcast rights to matches in LaLiga’s first and second division.

The deal could be similar to the streamer’s deal in the UK, where it broadcasts every game over two match days per season.

LaLiga’s current broadcast contract with Movistar Plus and Mediapro runs out at the end of the upcoming season, with the next bidding round due to cover the next three seasons from 2022/23 onwards.

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has previously spoken of the league’s need to innovate in order to keep fans interested.

If it is successful, Amazon would have broadcast rights to three of Europe’s top football leagues, with its new deal with France’s Ligue 1 due to kick off next month.
