A new survey is aiming to understand the historical pathways into the media technology industry in order to see whether they still exist.
The survey has been launched by Women in Streaming Media alongside IBC and industry partners, including IAMT, SMPTE, RISE Academy, and the Media Talent Manifesto.
The aim is to gather firm data on the education and opportunities within media technology and how that can help encourage younger people that there is a future for them within the industry.
“Every time I am at a trade show/conference/SMPTE meeting, people are telling me they’re struggling to find new talent, they’re asking if I know any graduates or people looking to move companies and they can’t seem to fill the roles they have open,” Polly Hickling, who is leading the initiative, tells TVBEurope.
“For me this means we need to better understand what the pipeline coming in looks like so we can then work out how to support it.”
The survey is being backed by Women in Streaming Media, but Hickling is keen to stress it is open to everyone working in media technology.
The first part of the results will be published at IBC Show in September, enabling the organisers to hold conversations about the results. “Once we have this first part, depending on what the results show, we will then be establishing if these pathways are still viable for new entrants, tying this together with our other strand of research looking at university pathways,” explains Hickling.
“We will then aim to have conversations with industry about where we go next, what support might be needed and checking in on the first question: are people struggling to fill roles and is there pipeline work needed to help with that.”
