Eurosport has secured the rights to broadcast Wimbledon live after agreeing terms with the BBC.
The deal will see Eurosport become the first commercial broadcaster to be allowed to air live UK coverage of Wimbledon.
The pay-TV channel has finalised details with the All England Lawn Tennis Club, which holds the rights to the Wimbledon tournament, to air the tournament from 2016 to 2020.
The agreement, which remains subject to Ofcom approval, will see Eurosport simultaneously broadcast live coverage of the final with the BBC, whilst airing evening highlights which will be timed to avoid a clash with the corporation’s roundup.
The BBC has covered Wimbledon since 1937, but with increasing uncertainty and pressure regarding the annual license fee, it ahs been forced to look to other ways of gaining income.
