Episodic TV under the spotlight at 3D Masters

3ality Digital CEO Steve Schklair has said that a number of series are already being shot in 3D, alongside the 2D filming schedule. The aim, he remarked, is to archive the 3D content for future syndication and for end of season 3D Blu-rays.

3ality Digital CEO Steve Schklair has said that a number of series are already being shot in 3D, alongside the 2D filming schedule, writes Adrian Pennington. The aim, he remarked, is to archive the 3D content for future syndication and for end of season 3D Blu-rays.

Schklair will elaborate on these topics at TVBEurope’s 3D Masters conference, which takes place at BAFTA, London, on 15 June.

“I think everybody would be surprised at how many episodic shows are planning 3D for the next season or have even started it,” Schklair told an audience at the Dimension3 show in France. “The reason no one knows about it is because even if shows are shooting in 3D now, the studios are only showing the 2D version.

While not naming any projects he added that episodic 3D “is going to do more to drive 3D TV sales than anything else”.

At 3D Masters, Schklair will outline how he believes it is technically possible to set up a workflow that works creatively and economically for 2D and 3D episodic TV. He will examine how many additional crew are required for 3D episodic over 2D, what the cost premium may be and whether any editorial compromises are required.

In related news, 3ality has inked a partnership with RED Digital Cinema in which the companies will train professional and aspiring filmmakers on how to create 3D images using their equipment.

“The biggest tent pole movies shooting on the planet right now, like The Hobbit, are all shooting S3D on EPIC and 3ality Digital,” said RED’s Ted Schilowitz. “The teams at RED and 3ality Digital have been working together for years behind the scenes. Now is the right time to take that relationship to the next level and integrate education components for the community.”

Other features using Red and 3Ality rigs include The Amazing Spiderman and Jack the Giant Killer.

“S3D is here to stay and choosing partners at the forefront of the technology that really grasp what true, high-resolution cinema and S3D are all about is essential for business and for the community,” said Schklair. “Educating filmmakers is a crucial step towards accelerating and facilitating S3D content production and ultimately consumer adoption.”

3D Masters takes place in London next Wednesday (15 June). For more details, visit www.3d-tvmasters.com.
