Ateme’s Kyrion CM4101 encoder has been selected by Eurovision for MPEG-4 4:2:2 10-bit video transmissions by satellite, and by Telecom Argentina for Copa América contribution, writes David Fox.
Its selection for Eurovision was the result of extensive tests conducted by the European Broadcasting Union technical department since 2010.
“We were impressed by the quality of the product,” said Paolo Pusterla, Head of Procurement & Network Partnerships at EBU Network & News. “Ateme’s Kyrion encoder meets our future requirements and we shall consider its usage for future events carried over the EBU Eurovision network.”
For the football tournament, Telecom Argentina deployed CM4101 encoders and DR8400 decoders supporting MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 up to 4:2:2 10-bit compression, and HD resolution up to 1080p60.
“We wanted to offer our clients – broadcasters, satcasters and other holders of a license for distribution to consumers – the best possible picture quality, while investing in future proof technology,” explained Alfredo Musitani, Product Manager, Video Broadcasting and Special Services at Telecom Argentina. “Throughout the field trials, Ateme and their local integrator Lade Profesional provided great support to our operations team.”
Raul Rivera, Director of Sales for Latin America, at Ateme commented: “This is the first time high definition MPEG-4 4:2:2 10-bit technology is embraced in the region for premium sports content transmission; for sure more projects will follow.”
