Darren Long (pictured) has been promoted to Director of Broadcast Operations of Sky, following the departure of John Lennon who is leaving Sky after eight years.

Long is currently director of Operations for Sky Sports and he will continue to oversee Sky Sports’ Operations until his replacement is appointed.

He has been at Sky for over 20 years, ever since the company launched. Long has played a major role in overseeing technical developments and innovations right across Sky Sports. This has included the moves to digital, Dolby, HD, 3D, and advancing the technology behind programming such as Monday Night Football, UEFA Champions League, Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports News.

Long will report into Sophie Turner Laing, who oversees Broadcast Operations at Sky.

Lennon has been director of Broadcast Operations for the last three years. He has decided to pursue new opportunities.

He played a central role in a number of Sky major initiatives. These include the planning and development of Sky Studios – Sky’s state-of-the-art broadcasting facility, the move to HD, and the migration to tapeless.

He also helped to develop Sky Skills Studios, an experience within Sky Studios which aims to help school children build confidence and life skills by bringing to life the experience of creating TV and digital content.

Sophie Turner Laing, MD of Entertainment, News and Broadcast Operations, said: “John has made a very significant contribution to Sky over many years and has supported a number of our key projects, such as moving to High Definition and tapeless. He leaves Sky with our sincere thanks and best wishes.

“I’m delighted that Darren has accepted his new at Sky. He embodies Sky’s ethos of relentless innovation and of harnessing technology to bring customers even closer to the content they love. In Sky Studios we have one of the most advanced broadcasting facilities in the world and I’m confident Darren will help us get the very best out of it.”
