The BBC has made a decision to broadcast three matches from Wimbledon in 3D, TVBEurope understands. An official BBC announcement is expected shortly, writes Adrian Pennington.

A source close to the production says that a decision has been made but there is no detail yet on which platform – Freesat, Freeview HD, Virgin Media or Sky – the coverage will be transmitted.

It would represent the first time the BBC has broadcast stereoscopic content to homes. In 2009 the BBC broadcast the England vs Scotland Six Nations rugby match in 3D to one cinema as a proof of concept test and followed that up by screening 3D coverage of England’s home Six Nations games at 40 UK cinemas last year.

The matches include the men’s singles and ladies singles finals and the men’s semi-finals.

Sony – which is collaborating with the BBC to produce Wimbledon in 3D – expects to beam the matches to 850 cinemas worldwide.

Sony has a three year contract with the All England Lawn Tennis Club as technology partners.
