Andy King, Head of Technology, Vision Productions at BBC Future Media and Technology, will chair TVBEurope’s Sports Broadcast Europe at BAFTA on October 28.

Signal distribution involves bringing pictures and sound from across a huge area, and from the planes themselves. Formula One Racing could be broadcast for the first time in HD next year. SIS Live, which provides production facilities to the BBC for its race coverage, has built a new HD-ready flyaway unit for just that possibility. While host broadcaster, Formula One Management (FOM) has yet to make the highly anticipated decision about taking the sport into HD, it trialled both HD and stereo 3D broadcasts earlier this year. We will be taking a close look at HD and 3D Formula 1 developments at Sports Broadcast Europe.
3D specialists CAN Communicate meanwhile were commissioned by a leading F1 race team to film a stereo 3D promo of race cars around a circuit. Achieving HD radio frequency signals, let alone 3D ones is notoriously difficult from fast moving vehicles, so how can it be done? CAN Communicate Creative Director Duncan Humphreys will provide the key insight at Sports Broadcast Europe.
Just two weeks after the closing ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games in India, the conference at BAFTA presents a golden chance to get to hear at first hand how the complex technical production of this major multi-sport event unfolded.
CWG Project Director Alan Bright of SIS Live will take delegates through the experience of working with host broadcaster Doordarshan and of managing the extensive logistics which included the technical production facilities and over 1000 crew to cover 17 sports across 12 venues in Delhi.
The summer was dominated by the soccer World Cup, so naturally SBE has a major focus on that milestone event. Dan Miodownick, Production Department Director at HBS, was tasked with balancing the expectations of broadcast rights holders and FIFA with what was practical in terms of covering the World Cup 2010. Miodownick will review the key planning decisions in South Africa and will look ahead to the infrastructure template for Brazil 2014.
Al Jazeera, ESPN and France 3 were just some of the broadcasters taking advantage of Input Media’s arrangement in Cape Town. Sky Sports News also launched its World Cup reports, including presentation of seven live shows every day during the tournament, from Input Media’s Broadcast Centre. Managing director David Johnson, will explain how the company’s £1m investment in this operation paid off.
