BBC outlines iPlayer upgrades and Britbox launch in annual plan

Expects Britbox to be launched "towards the end of 2019"

The BBC has published its annual plan for 2019/20 which includes proposed upgrades to iPlayer and the launch of streaming service Britbox.

The iPlayer upgrades still require a decision from Ofcom, while Britbox is expected to be launched in partnership with ITV “towards the end of 2019.”

Further plans outlined in the report include:

  • Placing fact-checking at the heart of news output
  • Growing the BBC Sounds app
  • Decision on the future of free licences for over-75s
  • Make the workforce at least as diverse as any other in the industry

BBC director general Tony Hall said: “Our journalism must continue to ask the difficult questions and hold those in power to account. The role of our journalism at home and abroad has never been more important in a fast changing and uncertain world. And where we have big decisions to make that will impact the shape and future of the BBC, we will make them carefully and responsibly. We will always put the public and our audiences first.”
