Australian Open coverage breaks ratings record

Coverage of the Australian Open 2016 tournament has received record viewers across Europe

Coverage of the Australian Open 2016 tournament has received record viewers across Europe.

The coverage, broadcast by Eurosport, saw a 17 per cent increase in average live audiences, which saw the finals become the highest-rated tennis content in the channel’s history.

Eurosport 1 reached record ratings with the Women’s Final between Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber, attracting 4.85 million viewers.

The men’s final was the most-watched channel in the UK at the time, attracting 4.37 million viewers.

“The record breaking ratings endorse our investment in the refreshed, new-look Eurosport,” said Peter Hutton, chief executive officer at Eurosport.

“We had German commentator Matthias Stach swimming with Angie Kerber, and experts such as Mats Wilander and Annabel Croft providing unique insight into the minds of the biggest stars.

“We invested more in production and it has paid back in our ratings, as well as setting a benchmark in quality for us to improve on at the French Open.”

Eurosport, owned by Discovery, has 243 million subscribers throughout Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa and the Middle East.
