Africa’s pay TV subscribers up by 25%

Pay TV subscriptions in Africa topped 14.5 million at the end of March 2014, a 25% increase over the 11.6 million reported in 1Q13.

Pay TV subscriptions in Africa topped 14.5 million at the end of March 2014, a 25% increase over the 11.6 million reported in 1Q13, according to the latest update from Dataxis Intelligence service.

Pay DTT subs rose 74.4% from 1.41 million in 1Q13 to 2.45 million end March, while IPTV subscriptions increased 33.56% during the period from 202,600 to 270,600. Basic cable subscription increased 9.94% from 577,350 to 634,750, while MMDS was up from 327,300 to 338,550.

DTH subs grew by 18.6% from 9.09 million in 1Q13 to 11 million in 1Q14. Digital satellite HD subs saw a 10% rise from 4.83 million in 1Q13 to 5.32 million end March, while the demand for VoD services also increased 18.5% from 190,300 in 1Q13 to 225,500 at end-March 2014.
