Genelec powers Germany’s first Dolby Atmos OB truck

The KeuleSound truck aims to fill a gap in the German market for an Atmos-powered outside production units

Genelec has released details of its support for KeuleSound’s Dolby Atmos OB truck.

Aiming to create Germany’s first Dolby Atmos-equipped outside broadcast truck, the Leipzig-based company selected Genelec’s solutions to enable high-end music recording. The production facility features a 7.1.4 Genelec SmartActive Monitoring system, including three 8341A monitors for the LCR positions, eight 8330A monitors for surround and overhead channels with bass management provided by a 7360A subwoofer and 9301B interface.

Martin Staffe, KeuleSound’s founder, commented, “With Genelec, I could get a complete system solution that would handle all aspects of room adaptation. You have the option to switch the listening position. I can set up a sweet spot for the desk, then move it to a different place for the tonmeister (supervising sound engineer) sitting behind me.”

Listening positions have been customised to optimise workflows using GLM calibration software. “When I’m alone in the van, I’ll use the GLM setting optimised for my mixing position,” explained Staffe. “When the supervising sound engineer comes in, we switch to their position. They get the whole picture because they’re listening to exactly what I’m hearing.”

Staffe conceived the idea for the truck in tribute to his father, who had suffered a stroke, and added, “I took my father to hear Atmos in the truck. He was so proud. He can’t see so well anymore, but he can still feel how the sound envelops you.”

“I now record every concert in Atmos and show people how it transforms their listening experience,” concluded Staffe. “It’s like sitting in the room with the audience. You can make sure people feel the full emotional impact of the music.”
