Netflix tests natural language AI search engine

The tool enables users to find content with terms such as mood

Netflix has debuted an artificial intelligence search engine.

The solution has received a limited rollout across some of the company’s subscribers using iOS devices in Australia and New Zealand and requires users to opt-in, according to a Bloomberg report.

Powered by OpenAI, the search engine aims to enable users to find content using search terms other than title, genre or actor, using queries such as “mood.” The report said it is likely that natural language will be a feature of the tool.

Netflix already uses AI to drive its recommendation algorithm, which provides content based on viewing history. However, the company has gone on the record to state it would not use AI to replace screenwriters, filmmakers or actors.

Netflix plans to extend the test to include the USA and other countries in the near future, according to the report.
