World first laser projection

A world exclusive takes place tonight on the IBC ‘Big Screen’ as Christie supports the first complete screening of a feature length 3D movie using laser projection. It’s also the public premiere of Christie’s first prototype laser projector, delivering 2D levels of brightness for 3D. The Hugo 3D feature and clips from Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Puss N’ Boots will be shown at 14 ft-L, addressing the problem of insufficient light levels on screen for 3D content.  “Christie firmly believes that the best 3D is the brightest 3D and we need to help exhibitors with solutions that can project compelling, immersive 3D experiences to their screens,” said Dr. Don Shaw, senior director of product management at Christie Entertainment Solutions.  “Our demonstration today will show just how truly spectacular a movie maker’s vision can be when shown at the highest light levels, making the shared experience more immersive and ultimately driving more cinema ticket sales.” Dr. Shaw will address the low brightness problem in detail in a short address, and stereographers Demetri Portelli of Hugo and Corey Turner of Transformers: Dark of the Moon will introduce 3 ft-L clips from their films and speak of the challenges of making a 3D movie knowing that it will be shown to audiences at inferior light levels.9.C30
