Viper camera slithers onwards

13 April 2006

As the next gen camera wars heat up, Grass Valley has been highlighting the projects, from Michael Mann’s remake of ‘Miami Vice’ onwards, currently underway with its Viper Filmstream camera.

These include:

Zodiac – director David Fincher’s take on the infamous US serial killer starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Fincher has worked with Grass Valley over the years to develop and implement the next generation of digital workflows on many Viper-shot commercials for clients including Nike, Xelibri, HP, Motorola, Lexus and Heineken.

Miami Vice – following the success of ‘Collateral’, director Michael Mann has used Viper cameras to bring the hit television series of the eighties up to date, with Oscar winner Dion Beebe ASC CSC (‘Memoirs of a Geisha’) as cinematographer.

Red Riding Hood – director Randal Kleiser (‘Grease’, ‘Blue Lagoon’) has created a fantasy world for this children’s classic, entirely shot with Vipers for its heavy use of bluescreen and digital composition. The cinematographer on the film, David Stump ASC, then went on to use four Vipers on the romcom ‘What Love Is’.

The Final Days of Planet Earth – Tom Burstyn CSC, a veteran Viper cinematographer, shot this Hallmark mini-series starring Gil Bellows and Daryl Hannah.

"For Grass Valley to develop and manufacture the finest digital cinematography offering, we worked together with industry professionals, found out what was really needed, and built something that movie makers at all levels could use with confidence," said Marc Valentin, president of the Grass Valley business within Thomson. "We are delighted that the industry has responded by using the Viper in an ever-increasing number of prestige productions."
