Sony takes to the air

13 August 2009

Red Bull Media House of Wals bei Salzburg has ordered Sony HDC camera and studio equipment for the TV production of the Red Bull Air Race.

The media production subsidiary of the renowned energy drink manufacturer has invested in seven complete sets featuring Sony HDC studio cameras. The sets each comprise a brand new Sony HDC-1500R system camera, as launched at NAB, as well as a HDCU-1000 HD control unit, RCP-750 remote control panel, HDVF-20A viewfinder and accessories such as tripod adaptors and microphone holders.

The speed, the high octane flight manoeuvres by top-flight pilots as well as the staging of the event at different locations around the world, are a continual challenge to the participants as well as the people and technologies involved in the live TV production.

Red Bull Media House opted for the new R version from the HDC series. It has a second generation 1080p60 processor with modern DSP LSI system for enhanced digital signal processing along with advanced focus features. The new CCD technology also enables higher bandwidths and greater transmission quality, especially at 1080p60. The signal-to-noise ratio for the R series has been reduced by 2dB. As with its predecessors, the camera can bridge distances of up to three kilometres thanks to the fibre interfaces.
