SMPTE announces student programmes

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) has announced a number of initiatives open to student members, with the aim of providing access to education.

The 2014 Louis F Wolf Memorial Scholarship is designed to assist students further their undergraduate or graduate studies in motion pictures and television, with an emphasis on technology. Each scholarship, up to $2000, will be paid to the educational institution the winner is attending. The award also includes conference registration to the SMPTE Technical Conference and Exhibition in Hollywood. Application forms can be downloaded on SMPTE’s website and must be returned by 15 July.

The winning paper of the SMPTE 2014 Student Paper Award will be published in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, recognising an outstanding paper prepared and submitted by a student member and the institution at which the work was done. The winner will also receive Conference registration. Details of the application procedure can be found online.

Finally, for a special student issue of SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal students in the field of motion pictures and television with an emphasis on technology are encouraged to submit papers to be published in the November/December issue. Each paper must describe work done by the author as a student, and address technical theory, research, innovation, application, or practice specific to any of the evolving technologies associated with the media technology industry. The deadline for submissions is 1 September, with more information available online.
