Quantel and Snell hold joint press conference at NAB

On the day before the official opening of NAB’s tradeshow floor, Quantel held the first of a two-part press conference with Snell, following Quantel’s acquisition of the company last month.

There were a number of announcements and upgrades from the companies, beginning with a new software release for Pablo Rio. This is the fifth new feature release since IBC 2013 and adds more capabilities to the system’s toolset. New features include XAVC export, red SDK with GPU support, and AVCHD Softmount. The software supports conform of Avid effects, and features Optical Flow slow motion.

The conference also included the debut of Quantel’s Genetic Engineering 2; a new shared storage solution for post. GE2 uses COTS hardware and aims to bring scheduling flexibility to the post process, allowing high resolution jobs to be instantly switched or shared between suites.

New editing tools for Enterprise sQ, new developments for QTube technology and Pablo Rio’s ProRes technology were also announced.

Rob Rowe, MD for Live TV at Snell then took the stage to outline the IP vision of both companies. “Our approach to ip signal routing is a little different than others in the industry,” he said, with the future of the industry lying in the use of standard IP infrastructure. The endgame, he explained is for “media production capability that is all IP; studios all IP live IP feeds from OB and contribution”, etc.

Ray Cross, executive chairman and CEO, snell and quantel, concluded by describing the benefits of the recent acquisition. “Together we have created a new force in media technology,” he said, delivering what customers
have asked for – “a one stop shop, effectively,” with more products across the delivery chain and a focus on continuity and longevity, with more systems upgrades, rather than product replacements.

The conference concludes this afternoon, led by Snell.
