Pick of IBC 2011 | TVBEurope Magazine Online & In Print

With 13 halls and more than 1,300 exhibitors, IBC2011 was the largest ever, with lots of new products on show. Noticeable trends were the proliferation of iPads, whether as control devices or ways for viewers to access more content; many more high-speed cameras; and the spread of 3D throughout the production chain to the extent that most new 3D products were evolutionary rather than revolutionary. From a wealth of nominations collated by our editors, David Fox has selected a record 75 winning products this year.

Chyron - Axis World Graphics: This is the first cloud-based graphics creation system designed for broadcasters. It can be accessed from ENPS, Final Cut or Premiere and "lets journalists create graphics quickly at any time, so they don't need a graphics department for late breaking news," said Paul Glasgow, VP of sales, EMEA.

Canon - Digisuper 95 (XJ95x8.6B) lens: Claimed to be the world’s widest-angle long zoom HD field lens, it is fractionally smaller (61cm) and weighs about the same (23.2kg) as the best-selling 86x, but is only about 5% more expensive. Its Image Stabilisation System has an improved optical shift-type stabiliser.

Vinten Radamec - Fusion FHR-35 and ICE: This is the first robotic head to incorporate Intelligent Control Engineering for "unprecedented control and accuracy in an innovative and highly compact form factor." The ICE internal motors and processing allow it to claim both the fastest and slowest movement, as well as pan and tilt accuracy better than 0.01º.

Merging Technologies - Horus: It is a high-quality standalone A-D/D-A converter that can be accessed from anywhere via IP on a Ravenna network, which allows comprehensive routing and control of the converter I/O capability. IBC was the first time Merging plugged all the Ravenna systems together, "and it all worked within a few minutes," said Chris Hollebone, sales operations manager.

Grass Valley - Karrera: The new live production switcher is Grass Valley's long-term replacement for its popular Kayak, and includes high-end features from its Kayenne. It will come in 4RU or 8RU frames with 1M/E to 4.5M/Es. Either can be combined with a choice of 2- or 3M/E control panels as well as a 1M/E soft-panel GUI.

Grass Valley - Trinix NXT multiviewer: The fully-integrated multiviewer supports up to 3Gbps and provides up to eight SDI multiviewer monitor outputs per card. All existing Trinix frames can be upgraded and it means added functionality with no extra cabling or additional rack space.

AJA - Io XT: The company’s first Thunderbolt-enabled video I/O device connects to a Mac to provide two 3G/HD/SD-SDI ports (including dual-link SDI 4:4:4 support), HDMI (with support for 3D), 10-bit analogue HD/SD component and composite output, up/ down/cross conversion, and a second Thunderbolt port for connecting storage or displays, in a portable package.

DPA Microphones - d:fine: A tiny single-ear headset that "has great sound quality, is very lightweight, very easy to fix and stays in place once it's put on," said Michael Trolle, EMEA area manager. The headset has a detachable boom and mic, so you can fix a replacement cable and/or ear hook. It costs €440 for an omni-directional version and €470 for cardioid.

JVC - Falconbrid: JVC’s tiny prototype 4K camera shows what is possible with its Falconbrid processing technology: the world’s first large-scale integration (LSI) chip for high-speed processing of high definition video. It is already in use in its first professional 3D camcorder, the GY-HMZ1. “We want to make it flexible for any user,” said Gustav Emrich, JVC’s European product manager, Creation and Presentation.

TVLogic - LVM-074W: The 1024x600 7-inch LED-backlit LCD is housed in a lightweight (600g) magnesium alloy case. Its new Temperature Adaptive Colour function measures the LCD panel temperature and automatically compensates the white balance drift caused by hot or cold weather. Other features include: waveform/vectorscope; 3G/HD-SDI input; HDMI to HD-SDI conversion; horizontal and vertical image flip; one-to-one focus assist; and audio level metering.

Front Porch Digital - Lynx: Users can manage assets worldwide, from any device or any location, using this cloud-based content storage management. "Most CSM system owners expand capability and capacity by adding additional servers to manage specialist tasks, but with a cloud-based CSM, these resources can be made available on demand for as long as they are needed," explained Rino Petricola, senior VP and general manager.

P+S Technik - PS-Cam X35: It combines the benefits of sync-sound and higher speed rates in a single, flexible all-purpose digital camera, which can record at any speed from 1-450 frames per second.

P+S Technik - Magic Support for the Freestyle 3D rig: It allows the rig, plus Arri Alexa cameras, to be perfectly balanced on a crane or lambda head. It was developed for Astérix et Obélix: God Save Britannia (currently in production), which is using three rigs.

ToolsOnAir/Blackmagic Design - Ultra Studio TOA on Mac Mini: Probably the smallest channel in a box system yet seen, this combines ToolsOnAir's just: broadcast applications for multi-channel ingest, timeline-based 24/7 playout and realtime graphics and logo insertion, with Blackmagic's Ultra Studio 3D and Atem production switcher, and the tiny, Thunderbolt-equipped Mac Mini, which should allow smaller TV stations to easily migrate from tape-based to file-based workflows.

Sony - F65: The single 8K sensor currently outputs HD, 2K and 4K, but it is not a Beyer pattern sensor and has 4,000 green pixels per line, giving full luminance in the green channel for a wider colour gamut than film. The €38,000 16-bit camera is designed for future digital cinema workflows.

Sony - TD-300: This shoulder-mounted 3D camera records to SxS cards using the XDCAM EX codec and has two sets of three 1/2-inch CMOS sensors. It has a 3.5-inch 3D LCD that doesn't need glasses, and a multi-control dial for zoom, focus and convergence. It will be available next month, for about €25,000, and first orders were from Presteigne Charter in the UK and OB Team, Norway.
