NOS encoding for Games

11 February 2010

Dutch company NOS has brought the Winter Olympic Games to the Netherlands via web and mobile devices using Digital Rapids’ StreamZ encoders.

Dutch public broadcaster Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) has selected Digital Rapids’ StreamZ encoding systems to provide live and on-demand web and mobile coverage in the Netherlands of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. NOS will supplement TV coverage of the Games with up to eight simultaneous live streams on the web and extensive mobile content. The StreamZ systems will encode source video into web-friendly streams for viewing via Microsoft Silverlight technology, and into multiple formats for mobile viewing. The encoded live streams will also be archived for on-demand access.

Roeland Stekelenburg, head of new media at NOS, explained that “during the 2008 Olympic Games, the ratio of streams viewed on our website relative to the size of our country’s population was one of the highest in the world. Digital Rapids’ StreamZ encoders allow us to provide the quality and reliability we need.”

StreamZ incorporates multiformat video capture, encoding, transcoding and live streaming into a turnkey configuration. Combining hardware-based preprocessing and software, it supports live and on-demand multi-platform distribution opportunities with realtime, simultaneous encoding to multiple output formats.
