PlayBox accelerates playout

Story Code : dc74

Channel in a box provider PlayBox has now integrated the latest release of its software with new, hardware-accelerated technology. The intention is to provide greater reliability in automated playout, by implementing tasks in software that previously required costly dedicated hardware.

By harnessing the power of the latest generation of Intel Core CPUs, PlayBox is able to make more extensive use of commercial off the shelf hardware. The combination of the new chipsets and video cards, integrated with PlayBox Technology software, results in a higher price/performance ratio, the company claims.

The performance boosts simultaneous processes such as the encoding, decoding and resizing of content, all on the same server. Ultimately it means more channels can be served by a single server, and it will pave the way for more functionality in future.

“Harnessing the power of the Intel Core processors is a major step,” said Don Ash of PlayBox Technology. “It allows us to run many more live operations in software, and establishes a flexible, high power platform for our channel in a box solutions that we can build on to provide more for our customers. The first products are already available.”

The first hardware-accelerated product from PlayBox is the new AirBox MPO (multiple parallel outputs) that scales and encodes several video streams simultaneously, speeding the creation of HD, SD and IP variants of content.
