Measuring the World in 3D on set

German facility CinePostproduction has built a large-scale mobile screening room for viewing 3D rushes on location. It made its debut on the set of Detlev Buck's feature Measuring the World.

According to CinePostproduction, evaluation of the depth perception of 3D images on a cinema screen has been possible only in properly equipped cinema grading suites. Its specially developed cinema trailer brings the big screen directly to the set.

The extendable trailer has a 3.70 metres wide stereo screen with fully DCI-compliant 2K stereoscopic projection. Depth and colour grading are carried out with on-set dailies systems from Colorfront, which CinePostproduction supported as a beta tester in the development phase.

With the in-house development ReFine Stereo, it is possible to correct mismatched images in factors such as the focus, polarisation artefacts and even the stereoscopic roundness perception, says the facility.

When German filmmaker Buck began shooting Measuring the World, an adaptation of Daniel Kehlmann's international best-seller, in 3D he worked with several 3D stereo rigs simultaneously, each equipped with Arri Alexa and Sony F3 cameras.

The volume of data was subjected to quality control on set by the CinePostproduction staff, including Colourist Sebastian Göhs and post production Stereographer Daniele Siragusano. Colour and stereo correction was also carried out in the trailer.

DoP Slawomir Idziak said: “To proof the footage on a big screen on set is absolutely essential for evaluating the stereo perception and a valuable support in creating the look.”
