Sky Sports, Hugo and Wim Wenders’ Pina were among the winners at last week’s International 3D Society Awards, writes Adrian Pennington.

Sky 3D director John Cassy was on hand to accept the award for Sky’s live 3D broadcast of the 2011 UEFA Champions League final which it produced for UEFA.

The LA ceremony garlanded Martin Scorsese’s Hugo with most awards including Best Live Action 3D Feature, Best Stereography – Live Action, and Best 3D Moment of the Year.

“Our theme for the night was ‘art form.’ Our honourees demonstrated that 3D is coming of age as an artistic statement, as well as technical marvel,” said society president, Jim Chabin.

The Society’s Lumiere statuettes were also presented to: The Adventures of TinTin (Paramount Pictures) for Best Animated 3D feature; Cave of Forgotten Dreams (Creative Differences) for 3D Documentary and a special Jury Prize for Excellence for Pina (Neue Road Films).

Sony Corporation of America was honoured with the Sir Charles Wheatstone Award for education at its Sony 3D Technology Center in Culver City.

“The range and quality of 3D production across all platforms reached extraordinary new heights this year,” said society chairman Jim Mainard of DreamWorks Animation.
