TV3, Vodafone to test 5G on ‘immersive sport experience’

Aim of the trial is to broadcast the live signal remotely from the Cloud, via six cordless cameras connected to Vodafone's 5G network which will run along the track's main straight

Spanish broadcaster TV3 and Vodafone are joining forces to carry out what they describe as the first trial of 5G-powered immersive sports technology.

The test will take place from 18th to 20th September during the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK), which is being held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

The aim of the trial is to broadcast the live signal remotely from the Cloud, via six cordless cameras connected to Vodafone’s 5G network which will run along the track’s main straight.

Three of the cameras will be state-of-the-art mobile terminals and a fourth PTZ camera will be operated in situ to capture the image and sound of the journalist in charge of the transmission.

The fifth camera, a GoPro, will be controlled remotely by staff and pupils at the Guttmann Institute in Barcelona which will act as an imaginary fan zone.

A sixth 360-degree camera on the track’s main straight will let viewers choose their preferred viewpoint via TV3’s YouTube channel.
