Key Prague trial for TV in pocket

2 November 2006

T-Mobile and Czech partner Radiokomunikace have launched a six-week public test of their ‘TV in your pocket’ project, which involves digital TV broadcasting for handsets based on the DVB-H standard. For the first time, the signal will be broadcast across a large territory that includes Prague, and it will also cover the interiors of buildings.

Users will be able to choose from ten TV programmes which they can switch between, using both interactive controls as well as the EPG. On this project T-Mobile is cooperating with both technological partners (Siemens, Motorola, Sagem, BenQ, Rohde &Schwarz, Gemalto and Nagravision) and content providers (Cesk_ televize, Prima TV, Euronews, Filmbox, National Geographic, TOP TV, JETIX, Playboy TV and CzechTourism).

“We have made significant progress since the first introduction of ‘TV in your pocket’ last year, both in terms of user-friendliness and in the scope of TV programmes and other services provided for our customers,” says Ji_ Dvorjanansk, TMobile’s executive vice president Marketing. “We are very happy that with this project the Czech Republic has become one of the pioneering countries where DVB-H could become a commercially successful multimedia service.”

TV in your pocket will be tested by more than 250 users, both customers and employees of T-Mobile. The main objective of the pilot operation is to test the individual elements of the service as well as customers’ preferences and behaviour prior to the service’s commercial launch. The main supplier of mobile phones for the pilot operation is Motorola and the signal will be broadcast from the Strahov transmitter using the Radiokomunikace network.
