One of the most fascinating sessions in the 2011 IT Broadcast Workflow Conference was given by David Roulson of Discovery Communications Europe. He discussed some of the questions you have to ask to determine what level of disaster recovery you need, and how to implement it.

When discussing workflow, the term service oriented architecture (SOA) has cropped up a lot recently. There is a general feeling that it is a good thing, a way of making individual processes work together. But what really is an SOA?

A few years ago the term media asset management was bandied around like 3D is today: many companies claimed they could do it but few had the experience and capabilities to do it well.

Media asset management is a term which has been much abused. You will find some suppliers who claim to be able to offer media asset management systems for a few thousand euros. What you get, of course, is a simple database for your content, which does nothing to help you run your business.

The phrase “video workflow” is an operational term, which describes any systematic pattern of activity where video is being passed between, or is being worked on, by people or video systems.
