HD backhauling from Media Links

10 April 2008

Media Links is launching its HD Fly Away Pack, allowing for the field delivery of HD signals via 270Mbps local loop circuits.

Utilising Media Links’ HD270 Coax codecs, the company claims that low delay, minimal compression and exceptional quality contribution is achieved. This provides users with a system that can backhaul HD from the field using as little compression as possible. In addition to optimal quality encoding, the MD2000 series frame – upon which the HD Fly Away Pack is based – supports a wide array of video processing products: audio embedding, up and down conversion, frame synchronisers and more.

“For remote transmission service providers who’ve historically offered satellite transmission equipment for news and events customers, this solution adds an additional capability that can broaden the bandwidth and service offerings that they can sell to their customers,” said Luann Linnebur, Media Links’ director of business development. “The HD Fly Away Pack meets the growing demand for high-quality HD content at bitrates that exceed the capacity of satellite transponders. In addition to the higher quality provided by the minimal compression, the reduced latency is ideal for live event transmissions where delay must be kept to a minimum.”

In the US in particular there is an increasing availability of 270Mbps local loops at cost-effective rates. This makes them, in combination with Media Links’ technology, an economical solution for the backhaul of HD content.

“After carefully examining the market and looking at the possibilities out there we have been able to develop an elegant and cost-effective solution to provide a breakthrough in HD video contribution. Media Links’ technology always ensures optimum quality and the HD Fly Away Pack introduces a new level of flexibility,” concluded Linnebur.
