Dutch viewers love to binge watch

A new report says 57 per cent of Dutch TV viewers binge watch their favourite series.

According to the latest study from Telecompaper’s Consumer Panel, the number of people who binge watch rose nine per cent from the first quarter of 2014 to Q1 2017.

The report says downloading is decreasing in popularity as a way to binge watch. Only seven per cent of those surveyed said they have downloaded a TV show over the past six months in order to binge watch. In Q1 2014, the figure stood at 14 per cent.

Streaming video content in order to binge watch is growing rapidly – just three per cent of respondents in 2014 said they used streaming; that figure has now risen to 24 per cent.

Finally, the report found that women binge watch their favourite shows more than men. 59 per cent of those surveyed have done so in the past six months, compared to 52 per cent of men. Men tend to download to binge watch, compared to women. Binge watching is particularly popular among 20-29 year olds, 74 per cent have binge watched a show in the last six months. The percentage dropped significantly for those in their 30s, to 62 per cent.
