DCMS extends Ofcom's investigation into Fox/Sky merger

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has announced it has extended the deadline for Ofcom’s investigation into 21st Century Fox’s proposed takeover of Sky.

The decision has been taken due to the General Election on 8th June.

Culture Secretary Karen Bradley originally referred the takeover to Ofcom and the Competition and Markets Authority on 16th March, asking them to report back by 16th May.

However, after discussion with both bodies, she has now extended the deadline.

“Given the proximity of this decision to the forthcoming general election and following discussions with the parties, Ofcom, the CMA and the Cabinet Office Propriety and Ethics team I wrote to Ofcom and the CMA on Friday 21st April to extend the period by which these reports should be submitted to Tuesday 20th June,” said Bradley in a statement.

Sky agreed to sell the remaining 61 per cent of its business not owned by Fox late last year.
