Cyprus Broadcasting selects Harmonic

Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) has selected Harmonic’s IP-based digital terrestrial transmission technologies and related services to support its rollout of digital public television.

Harmonic’s turnkey DVB-T solutions and experience gained from numerous digital terrestrial deployments around the world provide CyBC with a comprehensive video delivery system and seamless upgrade path from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) transmission. CyBC’s new DVB-T headend is located in Nicosia, and the digital service—featuring four digital terrestrial television and radio channels—will be carried over a microwave transmission network to mountain top sites and then broadcast via DVB-T signals to viewers.

CyBC deployed a broad set of video processing solutions for this project including Electra 5400 SD and 7000 HD AVC encoders, ProStream 1000 stream processors with DiviTrack IP distributed statistical multiplexing, ProView 7000 integrated receiver/decoders, and NMX Digital Service Manager.

“CyBC’s mission is to deliver quality programming that addresses the democratic, social and cultural needs of Cypriot society, and our transition to digital is a key step in support of this goal,” said Gregoris Maliotis, Director of Planning, Installations and Transmissions, Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation. “Harmonic’s DVB terrestrial technologies have performed impressively in a challenging physical environment and provide us with peace of mind, that our future service expansion objectives can be quickly and easily met.”

“Harmonic offers broadcasters a deep understanding of the digital terrestrial market and a comprehensive technology portfolio that addresses the industry’s specific challenges,” said Ian Trow, Director of Broadcast Solutions, Harmonic Inc. “Harmonic’s pioneering IP-based video delivery solutions give CyBC a simple transition path to digital DVB-T transmission, best-in-class video quality, and maximize network capacity to support additional and advanced new services, including HD.”

OmniWave, an authorized Harmonic reseller for Greece and Cyprus, was a key member of this project and provided additional technology integration and customer support services.
