Corning expands availability of all-optical Thunderbolt cables

Corning exhibited at IBC2014 for the first time this year, and announced that its Thunderbolt Optical Cables are now available in the European market in cable lengths spanning 5.5m, 10m, 30m and 60m.

The first all-optical fibre cables for the Thunderbolt community, Optical Cables by Corning are enabled by the company’s ClearCurve VSDN optical fibre. They are up to 50 per cent thinner and up to 80 per cent lighter than comparable copper cables, Corning claims. With a ‘zero bend’ radius, they are designed to withstand bending, squeezing and tangling without damage or loss of function.

“This radically different cabling technology is ideal for professional video editors and music producers – or anyone – wanting the freedom to transfer massive amounts of data at their workstation, but with the whir of noisy peripherals in an entirely different room,” said Bernhard Deutsch, vice president, consumer networks connectivity solutions for Corning Optical Communications. “Our products are designed to address real world problems and Optical Cables by Corning give users the ability to create, move and manage data for what they need and how they work.”

CorningCable_482With an electrically isolated noise-reducing design, the cables can connect a range of Thunderbolt-enabled devices, and also “’daisy-chain’ up to six devices at the same time and are ‘hot swappable,’ meaning they can be attached and removed without interruption to the system.
