Cinesite lands major HBO business

3 May 2007

Cinesite has been awarded all of the visual effects – hundreds of 2D and 3D shots – for HBO’s major forthcoming mini-series Generation Kill, which is being filmed on Kodak Super 16mm stock. Cinesite worked with HBO previously on the acclaimed and similarly battle-oriented mini-series Band of Brothers, writes Fergal Ringrose.

Generation Kill, scheduled to broadcast in Spring 2008, will be based on the successful book of the same name by Evan Wright, which was published in 2004 and won the Los Angeles Times book award. It follows Marine platoon Bravo Two of Bravo Company, First Marine Reconnaissance Battalion, at the spearhead of the American invasion of Iraq in 2003. The action covers a one-month period up to and including the fall of Baghdad.

Filming begins in June in Africa. Cinesite’s visual effects will recreate the epic scale of battle. “This is a fantastic opportunity for Cinesite to work again with HBO, who create such excellent and compelling television programmes”, said Antony Hunt, managing director of Cinesite.

Cinesite also recently created the visual effects for the BBC programme The Greatest Raid of All, presented by Jeremy Clarkson and recreating a daring World War II naval raid by the allies in France. Other previous television work includes The State Within (BBC) and Rome (HBO), for which Cinesite’s team received an Emmy award.
