Canon lens boasts world’s longest focal length

Canon has added to its cine servo lens line-up with the new CN20x50, an ultra-telephoto zoom lens for sport and nature TV production. The CN20x50 is the first lens of its type to combine a built-in 1.5x extender, 20x magnification and a removable servo drive, with a native 50-1000mm focal range that expands to 75-1500mm.

Weighing 6.6kg, the CN20x50 is portable and lightweight. It enables sport and documentary crews to capture footage at a distance, while maintaining high quality throughout the zoom range.

Compatible with a range of cameras, the CN20x50 also supports communication between lens and camera and will be available in both EF-mount and PL-mount variants. The EF-mount version utilises Canon’s own system, while the PL-mount variant supports Cooke’s /i Technology standard.  Both models feature a 12-pin serial connection.

For wildlife television, operators typically work in hostile and sensitive conditions that often necessitate shooting from extremely long distances, while sports productions typically require extremely high resolution for close-to-the-action stadium work.

There are two wildlife productions among the nominations for the Beyond HD Achievement in Image Capture, for the TVBAwards next week. The BBC has been nominated for One Planet, and Les Films en Vrac for Land of the Bears, as well as TV2 ASA, Norway for Fly med oss and NT Live and Sony for War Horse live in 4K.

Thirteen awards will be presented at the ceremony on Thursday 23 October, across Workflow, Delivery and Capture categories, as well as four Special Awards. There is just one week remaining to get tickets for TVBEurope’s inaugural awards event. IBC were confirmed as sponsor of the drinks reception which is sure to kick the night off in style. Sponsorship opportunities are still available: contact Ben Ewles ( or Richard Carr ( for more information.
