Cannes Film Festival to show Oscar winner’s VR short13 April 2017
This year’s Cannes Film Festival will include a virtual reality film from Oscar-winning director Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu.
The double Oscar-winning director’s film Carne y arena (Meat and Honey) is thought to follow “the intense and exhausting experience” of a group of immigrants and refugees as they cross the US-Mexico border.
Announcing the film as part of this year’s selection, Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux said “virtual reality is already an art.”
Cannes will also premiere two major new TV series.
Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake: China Girl will screen at the Festival, as will the first two episodes of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks revival.
However, while embracing TV, Fremaux said there are no plans to add a TV strand to the line-up in the future and the team see the new Cannes TV Festival, which launches next year, as a “natural evolution”.
This year’s 70th Cannes Film Festival runs 17th-28th May.
