The new GY-HM660 and GY-HM620 camcorders are the latest updates to JVC’s popular HM650 and HM600 respectively.

“We’ve taken all of the good things about [the previous ProHD models] and uprated them, with new sensors, better sensitivity and better image quality,” said John Kelly, general manager, JVC Kenwood UK. “There is still a strong market for networkable, ENG-style cameras.”

The HM660 “has some really important IP networking features, including an IFB [interruptible foldback] return audio path to the camera. It’s about taking all that was good about the 600 series and improving it.”

This includes a brighter, rotatable 3.5-inch LCD display for improved daylight viewing and light sensitivity of F13 at 200 lux for the three new 12-bit CMOS sensors. “[It’s] more than a step improvement, it’s best in class,” claimed Kelly.

Both cameras also have an integrated Fujinon 23x auto focus zoom lens (29-667mm – 35mm equivalent), with three ND filters as well as manual zoom, focus and iris rings.

JVC has added SMPTE 2022 forward error correction to the HM660 for increased stream reliability. It also includes support for Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP), which allows a direct connection to a number of content distribution networks including Ustream and YouTube, together with compatibility with Streamstar’s streaming production tools.
