Arri installs giant LED Fresnel wall23 October 2014
German TV news provider Tagesschau has outfitted its €23.8m new studio with 99 Arri L7-C LED Fresnels, gaining huge cost savings and full colour controllability along the way.
Tagesschau is produced by NDR for ARD, and the new 320sqm studio is home to 20 programmes every day. It has a huge, curved media wall, creating the look for each show. The projector can reach 20,000 ANSI lumens brightness, but only by setting its colour temperature to 6,000K.
Reducing this to 3,200K (the same as the studio lights), the media wall appeared much darker than the presenters. The solution was the L-Series, with its 2,800K – 10,000K range. As a Fresnel, it allows the presenters to be lit flatteringly and precisely, without spill light falling on the media wall, and gave a power saving of about 60% compared to traditional lights.
At IBC, Arri showed the latest in the L-Series, the 115W L5. It offers the same features as the L7, but at half the weight and size is more portable. It comes in three versions: the L5-C (Colour), L5-TT (Tungsten Tuneable) and L5-DT (Daylight Tuneable). While the L5-C is the most versatile for colour tuneability, the L5-TT and L5-DT are 25% brighter and still offer a select CCT tuning range.
New features of the L5 include a PowerCON power connector and an on-board battery input for use in locations without AC power.
