3net spearheads Sony 3D strategy

The new joint venture 3D channel between Sony, Imax and Discovery Communications is to be called 3net, writes Adrian Pennington.

The channel is set to launch “in the coming months,” according to Sony and not as previously believed early in the new year.

The announcement was made at a press conference at CES where Sony CEO and chairman Sir Howard Stringer said the company was embarking on the next phase of its 3D strategy – that of extending 3D into personal imaging.

New products include what it claims to be the world’s first double full 1920×1080 HD camcorder.

Stringer said: “3D is more than a science-fiction gimmick for producing special effects in Hollywood blockbusters. 3D is the way we see reality around us and 2011 will be a year in which 3D becomes personal. Sony will continue to lead the industry’s charge into 3D.”

The $1500 Handycam HDR-TD10 (pictured) boasts 10x optical zoom in 3D and viewing on an integrated 3.5-inch LCD autostereoscopic screen. It incorporates double image sensors and dual processors.

There are also 3D versions of the stills camera Cyber-Shot and the Bloggie imaging device as well as a $1700 3D Vaio laptop for portable viewing of 3D Blu-ray discs.

Sony also revealed prototypes of a 24.5 inch OLED glasses-free screen in 1920x 1080 resolution and 46-inch and 56-inch 4k x 2k LCD autostereoscopic screens. There is no timeframe for release of these products.
